We could write a ton of words about this new album by Grenier (former DJG), which was released today through his website for a free (or pay-what-you-want) download. But the man himself says it better:
“As a producer and an artist, I have always written music for this rave that only exists inside my mind. I think I’ve spent most of my life looking for this perfect space, a home, a context where a certain kind of music belongs. I’ve encountered it in bits and pieces over the years; a small dark room with a perfect sound system in Brixton in 2006, djs and artists playing a dizzying blend of uncompromising, expressive, honest, authentic, challenging, all the while still incredibly physical and high-energy dance music. An environment where you can be moved physically and spiritually, or emotionally. A place to work some shit out, some things that weigh on you, some stuff you just need to process and the only way to do that is to get pummeled by this insane bass music played as loud as it can get. I think that kind of thing is really what I’ve always been about.
I’m not a student of traditional dance music and I never have been. My infatuation with underground club music and culture was always ignited by the way the music impacted me on an emotional and cerebral level. Stumbling into the jungle room of a rave when I was 15 sparked my career associated with sound-system music and the dance music format but the truth is I still don’t really understand it. I’m not a sponge who can regurgitate perfectly structured club music built exclusively to make people dance, that’s not who I am, I just know how to write music from the heart and write music I want to hear. It just comes out this way and that is what the ‘Voids’ series is all about for me, creating my own context and releasing this music directly from me to you. I hope you enjoy it.
Dean J. Grenier”
All three tracks for download and the video are a part of Mowgli’s new project entitled Mont.alk, which repositions him in a much broader experimental angle, rather than simply a hip hop artist. Brilliant work in our opinion.
